There is nothing worse for a woman than to receive a beautiful, delicate piece of lingerie or a bra that she just adores and adores you for buying it for her; only to find that it is the wrong size and she cannot wear it. Determining her size is your NUMBER ONE task; and, there are a couple of ways to find out this information. The first way, and the simplest, is simply to ask her. However, if this is meant to surprise her, asking is not an option. You will need to do a reconnaissance of her lingerie wardrobe. If you prefer, you have to go snooping.
If you are planning on snooping, this is the information that you want to record:

It is sometimes difficult to understand where small, medium, or large come into play when you are looking at a dress size of 8-10. The following will help you convert dress sizes into the General Size:
The bra size is found on a small label near the clasp of the bra. The label generally has print on both sides so look carefully. You will find an Numeric/Alpha number in bolder letter and that is what you need. The number portion is the number that tells you how big around she is just below the breasts on the rib cage. The Alpha number tell you the size of her cups. Therefore a bra size indicating 34B suggests that she is 34" around the rib cage and her breasts fit into a B-Cup. If you see a very large number such as "85" it likely means that the bra is a European design and the measurement is in centimeters rather than inches.
Bra sizes might be needed for other types of lingerie as well so it will not be information that is uniquely specific to the purchase of a bra.
To find waist size, the easiest source is either a pair of slacks or a skirt. Check several articles to make sure that they are all the same size of waist (indicated on the tag). If there are variable sizes, then take the most common size of a garment you know she has recently worn.
Be careful not to select an older garment as this could be a "target" piece if she is looking to lose weight.
Weight is a very sensitive issue among women. To find her weight you can either guess, or ask; however, for heaven sake and yours, be careful or she will tear your head off. Phrases like "Holy crap, I didn't know you were that heavy," will not endear her to you. This might be a good time to exercise what is commonly known as "diplomacy" in your quest to buy her a nice gift.
